The South Hams of Devon in England
|
 |
Ivybridge is located in South Devon, in the South-West of England, and was first mentioned in 1280 as a
'dowry of land on the west side of the River Erme, by the Ivy Bridge'.
This bridge, pictured here, continued to serve as the only means of crossing the river until 1819, when the new bridge
joining Exeter Road and Fore Street was built.
In 1848 the Great Western Railway
arrived on its way to Cornwall, and the Ivybridge viaduct, based on a design by Brunel, was seen
as an engineering masterpierce, the piers of which can be seen behind the present viaduct. What nicer place than South Devon to explore in between your studies of the German or English languages?
